Get Your Flu Shot!

It’s that time of year again. Flu shot season! This year, it’s more important than ever to get your flu shot, because both COVID-19 and the flu may be spreading. A flu shot protects you from getting the flu, protects others from catching it, and keeps people out of hospitals, which are already struggling with COVID-19.

Who should get a flu shot? The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get their shot, especially people who are most at risk for developing complications from the flu, like small children, pregnant women, and people over 65. Healthy kids and adults also need to be sure they get vaccinated to help protect others at higher risk. We all need to help protect each other.

How serious is the flu? Every year, about 35 million Americans get sick with influenza, also known as “the flu.” The CDC says that in 2019, 16.5 million people went to the doctor with the flu, almost half a million were hospitalized, and more than 34,000 died. Flu shots reduce illness, hospitalization, and death. By getting a flu shot, you’re protecting yourself, your friends, your family, and your community.

When should I get my flu shot? September and October are the best months to get a flu shot because they allow your body time to build immunity before flu season hits hard. However, as long as it is still flu season, you can get a flu shot, even in January or later.

I got a flu shot last year. Do I need to get one again? Yes. You need a flu shot every year for two reasons: First, immunity from a flu vaccine only lasts a limited time. Second, flu viruses change often, and vaccines have to be updated every year so you stay protected.

Is it safe to get a shot this year? Yes! We’re all worried about COVID-19, but health care workers who give flu shots are taking special precautions to keep people safe, like wearing masks, limiting patients in the office, social distancing, and frequent sanitization.

Where do I go to get my flu shot? You can get your flu shot at a pharmacy, clinic, doctor’s office, or your county health department. If you’re not sure where to go, your doctor or health insurance can help you find a location near you and answer your questions.

What else can I do to avoid the flu? Everything you do to avoid COVID-19 can also help you avoid the flu. Practice good hand washing. Sanitize your home and avoid touching common surfaces like doorknobs, handrails, and elevator buttons. Wear a mask whenever you’re outside your home, and practice social distancing.

And remember, it’s not just you that your flu shot protects. When you get a shot, you also protect your family, coworkers, and that cute little baby next door.

Let’s protect each other. Get a flu shot.
